Democratic leaders vowed Friday to keep up the pressure on President George W. Bush to end the Iraq war with more votes next month on withdrawing U.S. troops.
House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she would seek a vote on legislation instructing the Pentagon to begin pulling out U.S. troops within 120 days, similar to a provision Bush vetoed in the first version of a war spending bill Congress sent to him in May.
A comparable provision also is
The democratic leaders seem to still be intent on confronting pres. Bush rather than trying to come up with a bill that can actually become law.
Bush will never allow a dissenting bill become law, so what can the Democrats do? They have too slim of a majority to get anything past the Republicans.
They must come up with a bill that can gain the support of 1/3 of the Republicans for it to become law over a veto.To do this they will have to compromise. If they don't nothing will change until pres. Bush leaves office.
They must come up with a bill that can gain the support of 1/3 of the Republicans for it to become law over a veto.
To do that they need a rubber stamp all the Bush agenda. Sorry, but your original premise is flawed: Bush needs to be confronted after all these years of having carte blanche.
It depends on what the democrats want to do. For the next 18 months they can pass nothing over a Bush veto without republican help. A confrontation changes nothing unless they can pass a bill into law. The only thing they can do with a majority vote is to cut funding for Iraq and that wold impact them in the next election.
Exactly my point; their hands are tied on the issues.
True. It's a lot like the Republicans and Clinton 10 years ago.
September will be the month to watch. Funds for Iraq run out then and pres. Bush will ask for war money for next year. If the Democrats are united they can refuse to authorize more money for the war in Iraq by a majority vote. That would end the war by December. Other than that, the Democrats have no option before Bush leaves office in 18 months.

I'm sick of this 'pass the blame' crap.
You couldn't do it the first time, what makes you think that you can do it the second time with no clear new strategy?
I don't think either party has a clear, thought out strategy.
No. They don't. It's either, stay the course or this crap. Neither are very condusive to anything. These politicians are useless.
Agreed, all of Washington is completely lost, and let's face it Bush (whom I used to support) knows this.. he can keep his agenda running the way it is until the election. If the Dems want to really win over the public they have to think outside of the box and actually work with some of the more moderate republicans to come up with a plan to get at least something into law.. without that, they will have issues during the campaign (the American public elected you to do a job.. and you did not do it.. so we will get someone that can, whomever that may be.. )
A very good comment. The democrats need to get some republican support to pass bills and to do this they have to work with moderate republicans. Otherwise nothing will get done before pres. Bush leaves office which means the status quo remains. The democrats will have to answer for what they do or don't do in the next election.
Ben J We agree on this. Most politicians are indeed useless.
in the truest sense.. that is why they become politicians.... they cannot do anything else..
Another good argument for term limits.
