U.S. combat troop deaths and other violence in Iraq are down significantly in some of the most dangerous places of insurgent activity, including Al Anbar province, military officials in Washington and Baghdad said Wednesday.
Maybe most significant was that last week there was not a single military casualty — Iraqi or U.S. — in Anbar, said Maj. Gen. Richard Sherlock, a Joint Chiefs spokesman. It is apparently the first time since March 2003 that could be said.

Anbar province was written off last year by almost everyone. Now it has gone a week without even one Us or Iraqi military death. This could not have been imagined last year. This is progress. It may or may not last but for now Anbar is a success story.

But didn't the violence just move to other areas of the country? We only have so many troops and putting a lot of them in one place, like Anbar, reduces the number we have in others. So while I would expect to see a reduction in violence in Anbar, I would also expect to see an increase in other regions...

Good seed...though I was pro-invasion, I was with the crowd that thought Iraq will degenerate into a massive civil war. This dramatic turnaround can only be attributed to the genius of Gen. Patraeus and the tenacity of our troops and of course the steadfastness of Bush & Co. while everyone else was screaming 'cut and run'.

Frankly I think they should've kept the troop surge going to so that the stabilization and transfer to Iraqis could occur even faster. No one really wants us to be in Iraq any longer-but we have to do the job properly-otherwise Iran will swoop in and take over or AQI might re-surface.

We need to focus our energy/resources on Iran and actually the broader War on Islam. Muslims are starting to agitate and are beginning their intifada in Europe-it tends to happen once they hit 10% of the population in a state...that is the bigger issue. We should be seriously considering the idea of deporting them all and banning Islam in the West if we want to avoid a civil war against them...we are after all in a war already with them (which began on 9/11), though most people (esp liberals) are very reluctant to acknowledge this reality.

I thought the war could have been delayed for a year to keep trying to get inspections. The defeat of the Iraqi army was done very well but after that, as you say, it was downhill.
I agree they should have had a bigger surge, sooner and kept it going for a year. The extremist Islamists are a major problem and if defeated in Iraq, they could turn to Europe.
Good comment.

I wish the US government would use this aportuninty and set a deal with the patriotic Sheikh of Al Anbar province ( Ahmed Abu Rhisha ). many Iraqis agree that he is the only one in that province who can solve the conflect there and even more , to be a part of the political system in Baghdad . I think his realistic and modern political thinking joined with his Iraqi family desent back ground would allow him to be a good leader and heared by many many Iraqis.

O-K,

Thank you, good comment also.

Yes, clearly Iraq was grossly mismanaged and caused great harm to our reputation and credibility, not to mention the loss of thousands of innocent Iraqi lives. Nonetheless, Iraqis also believed in our cause of bringing democracy and were happy to be freed from savage dictatorial rule. Agreed, Bush shouldn't have rushed in with too few forces (military victory aside) and should've anticipated major civil unrest after deposing Saddam. Well let's hope Iraq continues to find greater stability and is able to protect itself from its unruly neighbors.

Bush should've done a better job in mobilizing this country to fight this present third world war against Islam. Because of his incompetence, he lost the moment and unity we had after 9/11. Its going to be much harder now to get Americans to believe what the admin has to say, unless we have a few more 9/11 type attacks.

I'm hoping that Iran will be the catalyst that finally brings this civilizational war against Islam to the forefront. Its simmering under the surface and most people are completely ignorant of it. Because I've read the history of Islamic Imperialism, I know what's coming and its much worse than we can imagine. We can defeat it, as long as we stay on the offense against muslims-but first people have to come to the simple realization that all muslims are our enemy-not just the so-called 'radicals'.

Peace.

I agree with your first paragraph but we can't change the past.
Bush did a poor public relations job with the war. He should have explained it better, imposed a war tax to pay for it and sent in more troops.
I think our war with Islam is with the extremist islamists. Many Muslims are willing to coexist but the fanatics want to convert or kill everyone.

O-K,

We're definitely on the same page regarding Bush. He's made mistakes, but took a step in the right direction to treat this as a war against 'radical' Islam.

I think the greatest misconception we have (understandably) is the notion that there are two distinct groups in Islam, even though they're all informed (brainwashed) by the same identical ideology and read the same holy books, the Quran, Sunnas/Hadiths. The moderate/radical division is Islam's 1-2 punch against us 'unbelievers' and its helped Islam conquer country after country for centuries.

This falsehood arose from the 'brilliant' observation that not all muslims are right this moment trying to blow themselves up. Why did we automatically give them the benefit of the doubt when we have no reason to, esp. after 9/11? We should've aggressively scrunitized not just the religion, but the community from which these jihadists/terrorists arose.

How do we know that while their 'radicals' are trying to terrorize us into submission, confusion, fear and inaction-the moderates are quietly defending them and working to destroy us from within using our democracy against us?

In fact that's exactly what they're doing by attacking free speech, shutting down dissent, threatening or killing vocal critics/journalists/authors who speak out against Islam. Is it any wonder we don't even consider the possibility that these moderate muslims are just as dangerous as the radicals? Those who'd inquire for us are being silenced by this fascist death cult.

I too was under this illusion that this 'moderate muslim' unicorn exists until I had some heated discussions with some close muslim friends (something I'd highly recommend everyone does to learn for themselves) and it dawned on me finally that there is no such thing, they want the exact same thing the radicals want, to destroy democracy and have muslims take over the West.

They plan to do it by exponentially growing their population until they can vote in a muslim government that will then use the state resources to Islamify the country. That's what happened in Sudan, Lebanon and many other countries-they're trying it with Turkey also.

Obviously I'm not saying every single muslim wants this-but the overwhelming majority does. Those true moderates are almost secular and ready to leave Islam, the rest cannot be trusted. The best thing we can do is deport them all (except those who leave Islam) so we can avoid a future civil war in our states-but there's no doubt we're at the start of WW3 against Islam.

----
Nawar,

Since all muslims hate us 'unbelievers' and worship a child-raping terrorist who commands muslims to wage war against all of humanity (non-muslims) to make them submit to their savage death cult. If muslims kept their filthy intolerant religion to themselves like christians do for the most part, I wouldn't have an issue. But you already know this, you're just playing stupid (assuming you're a muslim as you seem to be).

BillSmith, I knew it. you are one of those crazy stupid people who has one sided mind to use for thinking . go ahead and hate Islam and Muslims . I do NOT care about people like you. I witnessed American officers giving orders to their solders to kill Iraqi Innocent families because they have the same idea of yours . and thanks God they were brought to justice in America. We are not against democracy or freedom of speech . Sure that in Islam , just like other religions, we have radicals and extremists just like what you have in America and around the world. also not to forget about serial killers that you have in your society and others. I know all these facts , but I would never ever think about all western or American nations as one. ( not all of you are serial killers ) . I have great American friends who consider me as their sister and we do respect each other very much . a word you do not know , I guess so.

Allan Neal-[BillSmith. I've been very busy...trying to convince Muslims I do not hold your views, and that most Americans don't.]

Why would you go through the trouble of prostrating yourself to people who hate your country and want to destroy it Allan? Are you a muslim too or maybe just a leftist America-hater as well?

Nawar-maybe you're completely oblivious but you are part of an Arab supremacist, fascist-totalitarian movement much like Nazism but its disguised as a religion. As a genocidal Imperialist ideology its aim is to destroy Western Democracy and replace that with its own rule under Sharia Law.

How often have we heard muslims/imams claim they're superior to every other religion and ideology and that they will take over the world? Pretty soon most Westerners will pick up on muslims Orwellian double-speak and that's when your game is up.

WW3 between Islam and the West is inevitable (as were previous wars), I invite you to join the winning side, ours. We defeated Hitler's Nazi war machine, you think a bunch of smelly religious savages can bully us into submitting to their backwards rule? lol

See, I don't even know what you mean by leftist American-hater. Wtf is that? And I'm not even sure what a Muslim is either. I see people. Btw, I'm not good with vegetation either. They're mostly plants to me, and I love them all, except poison ivy. It's a real....

Yes I am a Muslim lady working as a University teacher in Iraq. also worked for many years as an international correspondent around the world. my Family and I have great American and European friends , actually we consider them as brothers and sisters. I strongly agree that we have radicals and terrorists but no one has the right to insult or heart a whole nation or religion because it has tens or even hundreds of bad people . Evil people are around the world and no one can deny that fact . We as Iraqi nation experienced many crimes committed by some American officers and solders , but I would never ever hate or insult all the Americans . This is unfair.
